Korean-American cellist Minna Rose Chung is associate professor at the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg) Canada. In addition, she is co-author alongside Hans Jørgen Jensen of the internationally acclaimed CelloMind: Intonation and Technique, a discerning pedagogy method praised for its “dense and fascinating treatise focusing not just on the left hand, but almost exclusively on the aspects underpinning the most minute gradations of intonation…it takes written pedagogy to a new level” (Strings Magazine, April 2018).
Dr. Chung began her teaching career at Lawrence University’s Academy of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin. Within four years, her pre-college cello studio successfully graduated cellists into premier conservatories and music schools in North America and Europe. Dr. Chung’s reputation as a significant teacher escalated while teaching at the University of Alaska- Fairbanks, prompting her to earn a doctorate degree in cello performance at SUNY Stony Brook. Shortly thereafter, Minna Rose was offered a tenured position at the University of Manitoba.
Upon her arrival to Canada, Minna Rose was quickly reviewed as “a bright light, her intelligent musicality and rich resonance a wonderful addition to any ensemble, devoted and playing with admirable gusto!” (Winnipeg Free Press). Skilled in both orchestral and chamber repertoire, Minna Rose was a member of The New World Symphony (Michael Tilson Thomas), the Chicago Civic Orchestra (Daniel Barenboim), and principal cellist of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra (Kenneth Kiesler). Minna Rose made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2007 as a founding member of her New York ensemble, the Pangea String Quartet under the direction of the acclaimed Kronos String Quartet. Minna maintains a busy performance schedule with her current ensembles which include the Crocus String Quartet, the Desautels Piano Trio, and the Nacka Duo. In addition, she is a core member of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, “Canada’s tiny, perfect chamber orchestra” (Toronto Star).
Dr. Chung is director of the C-String Collective, a student-led cello/bass ensemble devoted to collaborating with the Desautels composition area in the world premiere of new works written exclusively for the collective. Since 2008, Dr. Chung has been the founder and director of Project Rio, a multi-faceted exchange programme for Canadian and Brazilian music professors and students in the teaching and performance arenas.
Minna Rose is a returning guest artist, teacher, and chamber coach to several international music festivals, including the historic Meadowmount School of Music (New York), the Canadian International Cello Festival (Winnipeg, Canada), Rio International Cello Encounter (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Piracicaba Music Festival (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Alaska Cello Intensive (Fairbanks, AK) and the Cincinnati Virtual Cello Academy (Ohio). This summer she will join the elite faculty at the Heifetz Institute in Virginia, USA as well as the Rosamunde Summer Music Academy in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Dr. Chung continues to give masterclasses, clinics, and presentations of CelloMind’s “You Aren’t Really Listening; Revealing the Mystery Behind Great Intonation” throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Her latest pedagogy research is devoted to an expanded version of thumb position technique, The Ultimate Fun in Thumb with Hans J. Jensen.
Dr. Chung is a recipient of multiple national awards in the creative field and featured in Strad Magazine “Teaching & Playing”, April 2018 issue. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Cello performance at Oberlin Conservatory (Ohio) with Norman Fischer and Peter Rejto; Master of Music at Northwestern University Bienen School of Music (Evanston, IL) with Hans J. Jensen; and Doctor of Musical Arts at SUNY Stony Brook University (NY) with Colin Carr. Minna Rose plays on a French 1776 Chappuy cello.
